The Soča Valley and the Triglav Lakes Valley

We will get off to a great start by exploring the Upper Soča Valley along the exciting Soča Trail that connects the most peaceful and hidden corners of Val Trenta. The comfortable path, equipped with several suspension bridges, runs along the initial course of the Soča – the most beautiful river in Europe – which here flows emerald among waterfalls, rapids and narrow rocky gorges. We will then climb the mountains, stopping in one of the most panoramic huts in all of Slovenia located on the Prehodavci saddle almost at the foot of Mount Triglav.
From here we will descend through the magical Triglav Lakes Valley (Seven Lakes Valley) to Lake Bohinj, the largest Slovenian lake above which traditional alpine pastures and alpine peaks rise. This idyllic alpine lake will be our base for pleasant day trips that will take us to the paradisiacal Voje valley and to Lake Bled which, with its transparent waters, the picturesque church on the island and the medieval castle perched on a rocky outcrop has become the most iconic place in the country. From Bohinj we will walk on the Juliana Trail passing though the verdant pastures of Dobrava and got on the train that runs along the transalpine line that once connected the heart of the monarchy with the sea.

MaroWays hikers on the way to the hut prehodavci in the triglav national park
From Trenta valley to the hut Zasavska Koča na Prehodavcih (2.071 m)

It’s time to climb to the top and enter the heart of the Park! An extraordinary crossing awaits us which in two days will take us to Lake Bohinj through one of the most beautiful routes in the Slovenian alpine world (and beyond).
From the Trenta valley we will walk through the Zadnjica valley climbing up through the Zadnjiski Dol gorge, squeezed between the majestic walls of Vršac and Ozebnik. The path, climbing in numerous serpentines, will then take us to the Čez Dol saddle (1,632 m). Above the saddle, the path becomes wider and more tortuous between increasingly bare slopes. We will then reach the Prehodavci saddle, where the hut (Zasavska Koča na Prehodavcih) is located on a panoramic hill. From the hut you can enjoy an extraordinary view of most of the most important peaks of the Julian Alps. On the eastern side, the famous Vršac rises above Prehodavci, followed by Kanjavec with Poprovec and Vršaki. On the southern side you can see the upper part of the Triglav Lakes valley with Velika and Mala Zelnarica on the left and Zadnja Lopa and Mali and Veliko Špičje on the right. Then the view opens up to Kobariški stol, Kanin, Bavški Grintavec, Jalovec, Mangart, Mojstrovka, Prisank up to Triglav itself. With a clean atmosphere, in the background you can see the Montasio, Jof Fuart and the snow-capped Hochalmspitze (Hohe Tauern).

Highlights of the day

MaroWays Superb view of the seven lakes valley in the triglav national park
Hike along the Triglav Lakes Valley and the Bohinj pastures

After a good breakfast we will begin to descend through the Seven Lakes Valley, a wonderful excursion destination characterized by seven permanent lakes and some intermittent ones that make the panorama always different. The different natural colors, which even gave the lakes their name – the green, brown and black lake – make this beautiful glacial alpine valley a real paradise for photographers. It is no coincidence that the legend of the Zlatorog, the mythical chamois with golden horns that still plays an important role in Slovenian folklore, was born in this magical place. Having reached the Koča pri Triglavskih jezerih hut (1,683 m) – due to its position among the most beautiful in the entire alpine world – we will then descend towards Bohinj through an area full of alpine pastures. The beauty of the place and its centuries-old traditions have made the Bohinj pastures unique, so much so that they have been included in the waiting list to be registered in the UNESCO world heritage. The bells of the grazing cows will accompany us almost to the end of the stage which will end in the alpine village of Stare Fužine near Lake Bohinj.
Dinner and overnight at Lake Bohinj.

From Bohinj we will climb towards the beautiful Voje, a green valley of glacial origin that descends just below the Triglav. Along it flows the Mostnica stream which has dug a picturesque gorge right above Stare Fužine. We will skirt the gorges, pools and waterfalls of the river until we reach the hut where we can refresh ourselves and recharge our batteries. From here we will continue along the beautiful meadows of the valley which ends wonderfully at the Kropa waterfall. On the way back we will travel along the opposite side of the gorges for a pleasant circular route. We will return to Bohinj/Stare Fužine in the afternoon so that we have some time to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the lake, an ideal place for a refreshing dip or a walk along the lakeside.

From Bohinjska Bistrica we will take the train that runs along the famous Bohinj railway, built in 1906 at the time of the Austro-Hungarian kingdom. This part of the railway is the most technically demanding stretch of the transalpine line that once connected the heart of the monarchy with the sea.
